Hockey Association of Chhotanagpur Tribals (formerly known as Welfare of the Hockey Association of Chhotanagpur Tribals) was formed in 1997 on the basis of no-profit-no-loss. It conducts hockey tournaments for youths mainly for tribal people regularly in Delhi and alson ChotaNagpur Region. The first edition was held in 1997 with 18 hockey teams in attendance. Later on it was increased to 37 teams of men hockey teams and 12 Women’s hockey teams.
The tribal youths from ChotaNagpur region (bordering districts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand & West Bengal) are continuously striving towards their career opportunities. Inspired by young Freedom Fighter and Revolutionary Leader Birsa Munda (1875 -1900) and Jaipal Singh of this region who captained first Indian National Hockey Team at Amsterdam Olympics, 1928 which won the gold medal.
The game of hockey flows in the blood of the tribal people of ChotaNagpur region and village/panchayat level hockey tournaments are still popular in this region. It is observed that the hockey tournaments conducted by the Hockey Association so far had been proving as platform for tribal youths to bring greater awareness of ever changing rules of the game of hockey due to introduction of synthetic turf against the natural hockey field. The objective is to provide opportunity for young hockey players in accordance with the latest rules followed by International Hockey Federation (FIH) of the game of hockey. The other objective is to build vibrant community to face the social challenges due to poor background it faces.
After Jaipal Singh, many hockey players of this region have been rendered their services to national hockey team which won the trophies for India. Some of them are Michael Kindo (Arjuna Awardee), Dilip Tirkey (Arjuna Awardee and PadamShree), Ignace Tirkey (Arjuna Awardee and PadamShree) and others. In the women side, tribal girls of this reason have been representing the National Hockey Team since 1990. Some of the popular names who donned the Indian National Team include Jyoti Sunita Kullu (Arjuna Awardee), Deep Grace Ekka, Nikki Pradhan, Salima Tete and others.
The Hockey Association of Chota Nagpur Tribals came into existence in the year 1997 to conduct hockey tournaments in Delhi and in ChotaNagpur region for tribal youths. The objective is to provide opportunity for young hockey players in accordance with the latest rules followed by International Hockey Federation (FIH) of the game of hockey by conducting hockey tournaments, coaching camps, seminars, etc. of their community game i.e. hockey so as to enable to represent them at National and International level. The other objective is to build vibrant community to face the social challenges due to poor background it faces.
